Frigiliana, Spain

Overview
Visit Frigiliana - one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. It is situated about 6 km from Nerja and 56 km from Malaga. This beautiful village stands 435 metres above sea level and offers spectacular views of the magnificent mountains of Sierra Almijara, as well as Nerja town and Mediterranean coast.
The old part of town has a Moorish origin. It's represented by some ceramic mosaics around the village. The new part is a traditional white Andalucian village.
In the centre of the town you can find 16th century mansion - the only molasses factory in existence in Europe that produces syrup made from sugar cane ("miel de cana"). It was built in renaissance style by the Manrique de Lara family, Lords of Frigiliana, and has an area of 2000 sq m.

You can buy molasses, as well as famous original wine and olive oil in local shops.

Walking a little bit further on the town streets you will find the Church of San Antonio, built in 1676 over the old mosque. During the restoration period some beautiful frescoes were discovered in one of the arches of the building.
The tourist office where you can get a city map and all information about the village is located just near the main square and near the bus stop. The streets of Frigiliana are just made for walking ...

Visit the Church of San Antonio, constructed at the end of 1676 by D. Bernardo de Godoy under the patronage of the Manrique de Lara family. It was built over a mosque and mostly represents the renaissance style. Recently some beautiful frescoes were discovered in one of the arches of the building, which can be dated back to 17th century.
Frigiliana is an ideal place for Hiking and nature walking. Surrounded by the magnificent Sierra Almijara it offers numerous hiking trails. You can enjoy a lovely walk along the River Higueron. The water is almost always shallow and the trail is suitable for all the family, young children will enjoy crossing the river runs and puddles.
Go Horse Riding and discover an Old town and its nearby mountain roads on the back of a beautiful Andalusian horse. There are a few choices of trails available. You can go around the town, use the old Frigiliana -Torox road with its spectacular coastal and mountain views, or if you prefer to go closer to nature -the Rio Hugeron trail will suit you best.
Every Thursday from 10am to 2pm the Local Market is available at the town square. You will find a wide variety of fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, electrical gadgets, handmade clothing, toys and ceramics as well as photographic art presented by Miro ( www.mirophoto.com).

It departs from the town centre almost every day at intervals of 30-40 min and provides a guided tour of the town which lasts about 20 min.
Frigiliana is a well known spot for numerous gourmet Restaurants and delicious locally produced dessert wine - "vino de Frigiliana". Spanish and international cuisine is served in almost every restaurant. Our favourites: Las Chinas , Balcon De Frigiliana, Romantica, Restaurante Al Fuente.
Local Festivals
Saint Sebastian is a patron of Frigiliana. It is celebrated on the 20th of January.

The Day of the Cross is celebrated on the 3rd May with the streets ornamented with crosses made from fresh flowers.

The annual "Ferria" is celebrated each year in June. 13th of June is the "Romeria" a highlight of the Ferria. On this day a procession carrying the statue of Saint Antonio going through the town makes its way to The Old Well ("El Pozo Viejo")-an area near the Rio Higueron.
